I love movies. I love books and writing too, but there is something about that translation to the theater that just gets me. So, today I’ve decided I am going to run down my most anticipated movies of 2016 and why I am excited to see them. I think this will be a top 10 sort of list. Without further ado …
#10. Batman v Superman
I know what you are probably thinking, “Why is this number 8!?” well, I am not a huge fan of DC. I like superheroes, but DC just has never done much for me, save for the Flash and Green Lantern (the comic, not the movie). That being said, I am excited to see the development of Henry Cavill’s Superman after his first movie. I think that Affleck was a huge bomb in casting. I could say he had his shot at being a superhero, but then again so did Ryan Reynolds and now he’s Deadpool (more on that later).
#9. X-Men Apocalypse
It seems unfair that my favorite group of Marvel heroes is getting bumped so low on the totem pole, but there are some great movies I am anticipating this year. X-Men takes this spot on my list because I am excited to see it, but I worry about the number of characters and the history of failed X-Men sequels. Still, I am excited to see it.
#8. Star Trek: Beyond
Like most fans of the series I wasn’t too pleased with Into Darkness. I feel that it lost a great deal of what made Star Trek … Star Trek. However, with Simon Pegg having written this script I am excited to see Beyond. I think we’re going to see a herald back to Star Trek while still bringing in some new themes to help rejuvenate the series.
#7. Independence Day: Resurgence
Some might have put this lower on the list, but I really enjoyed ID4 when it originally came out. I am also a fan of the style of 30 years later reboots we’ve seen (Star Wars: The Force Awakens anyone?). I think we can expect at least a wild ride with a herald back to some great sci-fi alien invasion. I might have put this higher on the list if they hadn’t decided to kill off Will Smith’s character in a training accident. I think the character deserved some better treatment than that.
This almost made my top 5. I am really excited to see World of Warcraft brought to the theatrical stage, however, I worry about the amount of CGI being thrown into this film. Lord of the Rings managed to make Orcs, look like Orcs without CGI in most cases. Granted Blizzard has a unique Orc. So this is my Birthday Movie this year. Since it premieres in June and all. Pretty excited.
#5. Suicide Squad
This takes the bottom slot of my top 5, not because I don’t think it will be good, but because it is DC and I am not really familiar with the characters. I am pretty excited about the twist and I think we’ll see DC finally pull out their Cinematic Universe. Marvel has been stomping them pretty soundly, so I am excited to see this twist on the
superhero supervillain movie.
#4. Rogue One
The director is the reason this doesn’t make number one on my list. I hated the Golden Compass and it had a stellar cast. RO has a stellar cast as well, but we can only judge a director by his past merits. I am still excited to see RO I mean seriously, it is Star Wars, why not see it!?
#3. Doctor Strange
Tom Riddle, Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Strange. Benedict Cumberbatch is the best casting I can imagine for this role. I am really excited to see one of my favorite Marvel heroes on screen. I am also really glad that Marvel is branching out from their core heroes to bring Doctor Strange to the big screen. This one has me giddy!
#2. Captain America: Civil War
The Cap is Back, and so is Bucky. I cannot even express how excited I am for this movie. Civil War is going to bring about an entirely new era for Marvel and one that I think will redefine the MCU. I am super stoked about this one.
Before I move on to number one on my list, I have a couple of honorable mentions that almost made the list:
Honorable Numero Uno: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny
I’ve been waiting for a sequel to this film for a long time. I absolutely loved CTHD when it first came out along with others of its type. The mystical swordsmanship and mystical setting have always struck a chord with me. The plot does seem a bit hinky though and I am not sure it is going to have the same shock and awe that the original had for me. Plus it is a Netflix movie, so it doesn’t really fit in with all the other films on my list.
Honorable Numero Dos: The Jungle Book
I love the cast, Scarlett Johansson (Kaa), Idris Elba (Shere Khan), Bill “Fucking” Murray (Baloo), Christopher Walken (King Louie), Ben Kingsley (Bagheera). I mean seriously that is a stellar cast. However, I am always wary of real life animals in a talking animal movie. I think this could be really good, and it looks visually stunning, but I am not sure.
Now, without any further ado, I give you my number one pick!
The Merc with a Mouth. Ryan Reynolds was born to be Deadpool. The promos, the tongue in cheek comedy, the 4th wall breaking conversations and Chimichangas. This is Deadpool. I am so excited that this is being brought to the big screen. I read that the creator of the comic said that the movie is the best version of Deadpool we’ve ever seen. That really gets me excited! This is my number one for a reason.
Thoughts? Agree or Disagree, let’s discuss. Until next time folks.
