It is no secret making a living in today’s society is difficult; or in yesterday’s society for that matter. While on the road to becoming a paid writer one must work and advance as best they can. This keeps the wife happy, the bill collector happy, and by proxy the struggling writer at least nominally so. I have always had a passion for writing, but I did not take it seriously until recently; when, of course, I realized that writing is not something I do.
For those who do not write, let me put it this way. If you have chosen a profession that expresses who you are, take for instance a computer programmer. You, as a programmer, are a tinkerer, problem solver, and probably addicted to caffeine. Yet, you identify this and say you are a PROGRAMMER, or COMPUTER PROGRAMMER. For one who writes we have a number of titles, Novelist, Journalist, Poet, the list goes on. All in all they equal to the same thing, WRITER. I AM A WRITER.
Writing is a part of who I am. It will always be a part of me and I dare not try to deny it. I tried to do so, when I turned 18 and thought it was time to put away childish things, I stopped writing. I tempted fate a couple of times and picked up a pen to scribble a short story, but then left it in that notebook and never looked at it again. I dabbled in Dungeons and Dragons and wrote some character backgrounds, some campaign settings, but nothing I took too seriously. Then it struck me, when I write I feel fulfilled. No matter if it is a blog post, a novel, a poem, or simply an essay for a school project. I am fulfilled when I write.
So, you might ask me why I bring this up? I have decided that I am going to be a WRITER in every sense of the word. In order to survive I must keep my job and I will continue to strive for advancement, running the rat race with all the other rats in the maze, but mark my words I will not stop writing. I have decided to take on freelance work (should I find it, you would not believe how difficult that is!), I will continue writing my Monday blog posts, and I will continue writing my novels. Yes, the dream is to be able to be a full fledged author, A WRITER who is so pay or no (however pay would be nice).
So here is the pledge I have written:
I, DJ Morand, hereby do solemnly swear, I AM A WRITER. I shall endeavor to meet my deadlines, pen my works, and follow through on my projects. My weapon of choice, be it keyboard, uni-ball vision fine point pen, dictation machine (voice recorder), notepad, or notepad++ (what I am presently typing this in), shall be prepared and ready for the task. I am a wordsmith and like the blacksmiths of the days of yore, I will ply my trade and hone my works to perfection, for I AM A WRITER. Weekend Trips, Vacations to the Sea, Work Days filled with frustration, all shall fall before my mighty pen, for it is greater than any sword. I AM A WRITER!
Until next time folks.
